The walnut market in Iraq expanded significantly from 2018 to 2023, with total volume more than doubling from 17 192 t to 38 359 t. This growth was driven entirely by rising imports, which increased from 15 714 t to 36 894 t over the period, while domestic production remained stable at around 1 450 t per year.

After a sharp rise in 2019, market volume dipped slightly in 2020 before recovering and growing steadily through 2022. The most dramatic increase occurred in 2023, when imports nearly doubled from the previous year, pushing the total market to its peak. The upward trend continued into 2024, with import volumes reaching 40 122 t.

After two years of decline, walnut production in Iraq increased in 2020. The country produced 1 474 tonnes of walnuts that year, representing a modest year-over-year growth of 2.6%. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 2.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 1 437 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 2.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan consistently dominated Iraq's walnut export structure. Turkey accounted for 41.6% of exports in kind, Ukraine for 29.9%, and Uzbekistan for 28.6%, together representing 100% of total export flows.

Iraq imported approximately 19 630 tonnes of walnuts in 2020, marking a modest year-over-year decline of 6.7%. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 13.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.3%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 15 714 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 9.2%. In contrast, 2019 recorded the highest import volume at 21 030 tonnes, with the largest increase of 33.8%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates formed the core group of partners for Iraq's walnut imports in kind. Turkey accounted for 50.1% of imports, Ukraine for 21.0%, and the UAE for 12.9%, together representing 84.1% of total import flows.

Iraq's walnut import value increased for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 60 740 thousand US dollars, which represents a solid 15.6% advance from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, import value increased by 3.4%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 1.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 51 808 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 11.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Ukraine remained the main sources of walnuts for Iraq in value terms. Turkey accounted for 55.9% of import value, the UAE for 15.0%, and Ukraine for 10.5%, together representing 81.4% of total import value.
