Earlier Report Observations
The walnut market in India showed stability from 2018 to 2020, with volumes hovering around 313–315 thousand tonnes. Customs seizures of illegally imported Chinese walnuts declared as Afghan in 2018 helped protect domestic producers from cheap imports, supporting local output. However, production dipped slightly in 2020, leading to a minor contraction in market volume.
Market growth accelerated from 2021, driven by increased consumer demand fueled by promoted health benefits of walnuts. This pushed imports higher, compensating for a temporary drop in domestic production. By 2022, expanded cultivation in mountainous states boosted production back to 289 thousand tonnes, while customs crackdowns on counterfeit walnuts affected import patterns. The market surged to 377.7 thousand tonnes in 2023, largely due to the entry of Chilean walnuts, which raised import volumes and intensified competition.
