Earlier Report Observations

Cherry production in India remained stable between 2018 and 2023, hovering around 10 100 t annually, primarily from the Kashmir Valley. Adverse weather conditions, including prolonged rains, periodically affected local harvests. Meanwhile, urbanization and increasing health consciousness among consumers boosted demand for fresh fruits like cherries, leading to a gradual rise in imports to supplement domestic supply.

From 2021 onward, the cherry market expanded significantly, with market volume growing from 10 848 t in 2021 to 12 556 t in 2023. This growth was driven by a surge in imports, which jumped from 729 t in 2021 to 2 464 t in 2023. Regulatory changes that strengthened cold-chain infrastructure and policies promoting sustainable agriculture and transparent labeling facilitated fruit imports. Additionally, shifting consumer preferences toward fresh, healthy, and conveniently packaged ready-to-eat products sustained demand for imported cherries.

The gradual replacement of traditional cherry trees with more climate-resilient imported varieties in Kashmir aimed at improving long-term production stability, though domestic output remained steady during the period.
