Earlier Report Observations

The walnut market in Asia expanded from 1.9 million tons in 2018 to 2.8 million tons in 2023, driven primarily by increased domestic production. This growth was supported by the expansion of walnut cultivation areas in Yunnan province, which became a pillar industry for poverty alleviation, and by improved standardization and scaling in Xinjiang, enhancing yield and quality.

After reaching 2.3 million tons in 2020, the market volume dipped slightly in 2021. During this period, walnut exports from China had risen substantially, reaching 95 000 tons in 2019, while processing companies like Six Walnuts invested in product innovation, launching high-end walnut milk variants and accumulating over CNY 2 billion in R&D spending to sustain demand for raw nuts.

The industry further consolidated through the development of integrated walnut industrial parks in Yunnan and whole-chain initiatives in Ningguo, aiming for higher value-added products. By 2024, new competitors like Chengde Lulu, Wahaha, and Yili entered the walnut beverage segment, intensifying competition, while government measures such as price index insurance in Dali supported farmer incentives and risk management.
