Earlier Report Observations

The in-shell almond market in India expanded significantly from 162.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 272.1 thousand tons in 2023, a growth of over 67%. This surge was primarily fueled by a sharp increase in imports, which rose from 149.1 thousand tons to 259.7 thousand tons over the same period. Underlying this trend were factors such as growing health-conscious consumer demand and the absence of quantitative import restrictions, which allowed the market to respond freely to rising consumption.

A notable jump occurred in 2020 when imports leaped by 35% to 218.1 thousand tons, pushing the total market volume to 228.9 thousand tons. Imports continued to climb steadily thereafter, reaching 259.7 thousand tons by 2023. Domestic production played a minor role, fluctuating between 10.9 and 12.5 thousand tons and accounting for less than 5% of the market supply.

The market operated within a regulatory framework that included a 12% GST on almonds and a tariff on imported in-shell almonds, but these did not curb the import growth. Additionally, a long-standing requirement for phosphine fumigation at origin applied to all shipments. The United States remained the dominant supplier, accounting for the majority of imports throughout the period.
