The walnut market in Armenia grew from 3 480 t in 2018 to a peak of 5 047 t in 2020, supported by robust economic conditions. The country's economic activity reached 5.8% in 2018 and grew by 6.1% in early 2019, which bolstered domestic production and export opportunities for walnuts.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 2020, market volume reached its highest level. A subsequent correction brought the market to 4 542 t in 2023, still significantly above pre‑pandemic levels.

Domestic production followed a similar pattern, while imports of walnuts increased notably from 2022 onward, contributing to overall market supply.

Armenia's walnut production has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 4 959 tonnes of walnuts, which represents a 44.4% increase compared to the previous year. However, looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production actually decreased by 5.8%, averaging an annual decline of 2.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 3 298 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 37.3% that year.

Exports walnuts from Armenia

In 2020, Armenia exported 165.5 tonnes of walnuts, marking an 88.4% increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 680.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 98.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia and Kazakhstan were consistently the primary destinations for Armenia's walnut exports in volume terms, together accounting for 99.9% of total shipments.

Imports walnuts to Armenia

Imports in kind, t

After two years of growth, Armenia's walnut imports declined in volume. In 2020, the country imported 254.2 tonnes of walnuts, indicating a 12.4% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports still increased overall by 65.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 18.2%. The peak import volume was recorded in 2019 at 290.1 tonnes, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 44.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine and Chile were the two leading sources of walnut imports to Armenia in volume terms, together making up 83.7% of total imports, with the remainder coming from a diverse range of other countries.

Armenia's walnut imports have increased in value for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 1 646 thousand US dollars, reflecting a significant 22.9% rise compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, import value grew by 140.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 34.0%.
