From 2018 to 2021, the walnut market in Sub-Saharan Africa showed little movement, with annual volumes holding between 126.5 and 127.7 thousand tons. This stability occurred as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) entered into force in 2019 and began progressively lowering tariff and non-tariff barriers for agricultural goods, including nuts, setting the stage for future trade expansion.

A pronounced upturn began in 2022, when the market volume rose to 134.3 thousand tons, followed by another jump to 143.6 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was primarily driven by improved market access and trade flows under the AfCFTA, which strengthened intra-African agricultural commerce. The region's concurrent policy focus on boosting local processing and adding value to nut crops, notably in Côte d'Ivoire, further supported production and consumption trends.
