The vegetable puree market in Eastern Africa experienced significant shifts between 2018 and 2022. Market volume dropped sharply to 257 thousand tonnes in 2019 from 398 thousand tonnes the prior year, primarily due to a halving of imports. A recovery followed, with the market reaching 291 thousand tonnes by 2022, supported by a steady rise in domestic production, which grew from 86 thousand tonnes to 118 thousand tonnes over this period.

From 2023, regional government initiatives began to influence the market. In Tanzania, generous tax relief on packing technology and a plan to establish cold storage centers boosted vegetable preservation capacity and productivity. This contributed to a rise in domestic production to 134 thousand tonnes and helped grow the overall market volume to 307 thousand tonnes. Concurrently, Uganda introduced a new digital system for fruit and vegetable farmers to enhance export compliance, while Rwanda promoted improved post-harvest handling and certification schemes, all supporting market development and access.

Vegetable puree exports from Eastern Africa have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2019, exports reached 8.6 t, up by 376.0% year-on-year. Between 2017 and 2019, exports surged by 18 105.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 466.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Democratic Republic of the Congo was the main destination for vegetable puree exports from Eastern Africa, accounting for 72.2% of total shipments. The remaining share was distributed among several smaller markets.

Vegetable puree exports from Eastern Africa have grown in value for the second year in a row. In 2019, the region exported 26.5 K $ US worth of vegetable puree, which is 398.5% higher than in 2018. From 2017 to 2019, export value increased by 910.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 116.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the Democratic Republic of the Congo remained the leading buyer of vegetable puree from Eastern Africa in value terms, with 77.4% of total exports. The rest was spread across many other countries.

After declining for two years, vegetable puree imports into Eastern Africa have increased. In 2020, the region imported 170.9 t of vegetable puree, marking a moderate 8.3% rise compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 77.4%, equating to an average annual decrease of 39.1%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 157.7 t, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 58.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, three key markets—Italy, China, and France—together accounted for 71.8% of total vegetable puree imports into Eastern Africa by volume.

After two years of decrease, vegetable puree import volumes into Eastern Africa have risen. In 2020, imports totaled 418.5 K $ US, showing a robust 21.4% increase year-on-year. From 2017 to 2020, import value decreased by 35.2%, with an average annual decline of 13.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 344.7 K $ US, with the largest drop also occurring in 2019 at 33.0%.
