The uncooked pasta market in ECOWAS grew from 175 тыс. т in 2018 to 195 тыс. т in 2019, then surged sharply to 299 тыс. т in 2020. This spike was driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which triggered panic buying and a shift toward home cooking, significantly boosting demand for dried pasta.

After the pandemic peak, the market volume contracted to 251 тыс. т in 2021 and further declined to 215 тыс. т by 2023. The downturn coincided with a sharp increase in wheat prices due to adverse global weather conditions in 2022, raising production costs and likely dampening consumption. Import prices for uncooked pasta also rose by 12–15% that year, putting additional pressure on the market.

Throughout the period, product innovation continued with Nestle launching spinach-infused atta noodles and Noodles & Company introducing stuffed pasta dishes, reflecting broader trends toward plant-based and convenient options. However, these developments did not offset the overall market correction following the pandemic-driven surge.

In 2019, ECOWAS production of uncooked pasta experienced no significant change. However, in 2020, production surged to 91 017 tonnes, marking a substantial 20.6% increase compared to the previous year. Over the entire 2017-2020 period, production grew by 20.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.5%.

Exports uncooked pasta from ECOWAS

The export market for uncooked pasta in ECOWAS showed considerable volatility. In 2017, exports reached their lowest point, then surged dramatically in 2018 to a peak of 21.2 thousand tonnes, representing an extraordinary 1 290.7% increase. By 2020, exports had declined significantly to 5.1 thousand tonnes, a 68.3% drop from the previous year.

Between 2017 and 2020, Mauritania and the United Kingdom emerged as the primary destinations for ECOWAS uncooked pasta exports in volume terms. Mauritania accounted for 0.7% of total export flows, while the United Kingdom represented 0.6%, together comprising 1.3% of all exports.

ECOWAS exports of uncooked pasta in value terms declined for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 39.9 million US dollars, which represents a 10.0% decrease from 2019. The peak occurred in 2018 at 52.0 million US dollars, marking a 69.4% increase from the previous year. In 2019, exports fell by 14.7%. Overall, between 2017 and 2020, export values increased by 30%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.1%.
