Earlier Report Observations

The uncooked pasta market in Eastern Africa saw a major downturn after 2018, when it reached 374.8 thousand tons. By 2019, the market volume had fallen sharply to 258.5 thousand tons. This was followed by a period of modest fluctuation, with the market stabilizing at a lower level, ending at 219.0 thousand tons in 2023.

The initial contraction was largely due to a dramatic reduction in imports, which more than halved from 226.4 thousand tons in 2018. Domestic production remained more resilient, showing recovery in 2020 and 2021 before declining from 2022 onward alongside imports, which continued to trend downward through 2023.

Exports from the region remained marginal throughout the period. The overall market trajectory points to a significant and sustained reduction in total consumption compared to the high base year of 2018.
