The pastry market in ECOWAS experienced substantial expansion from 2018 to 2023, with market volume more than doubling over the period. After a slight dip to 91.3 thousand tons in 2019, consumption recovered and entered a phase of accelerated growth, particularly from 2021 onward.

The surge in market size was primarily driven by a sharp increase in imports, which rose from 28.2 thousand tons in 2018 to 126.1 thousand tons in 2023. Domestic production also grew, but at a more moderate pace, from 65.2 to 77.2 thousand tons.

By 2023, the pastry market reached 202.8 thousand tons, marking an increase of nearly 120% compared to 2018. This growth highlights the rising demand for pastry products in the region.

ECOWAS has seen pastry production rise for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 77 283 tonnes of pastry, marking a solid 17.2% increase compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 19.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.0%.

In 2020, the value of pastry production in ECOWAS was 163.4 million US dollars, which represents an 11.2% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value fell by 12.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of -4.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 145.2 million US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2018, dropping by 22.0%, while the biggest increase was in 2019, rising by 26.7%.

Exports pastry from ECOWAS

The market showed an unstable trend over the period. Export levels fluctuated significantly, with a 5.5-fold difference between the low in 2017 and the high in 2019. In 2020, ECOWAS exported 690 tonnes of pastry, which was a sharp decline of 63.3% compared to 2019. The peak was in 2019 at 1 881 tonnes, and the largest increase happened in 2018, surging by 217.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export market for pastry in kind was diverse. Chad accounted for 15.8% of exports, Thailand for 3.2%, and Gabon for 1.3%, together making up just 20.3% of total flows. The remaining 79.7% was distributed among many other countries.

The market exhibited an unstable trend throughout the timeframe. Export volumes peaked in 2019 and hit a low in 2017, with a top-to-bottom ratio of 5.4 times. In 2020, ECOWAS's pastry exports were valued at 1 459 thousand US dollars, a contraction of 72.2% compared to the previous year. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 5 248 thousand US dollars, and the largest increase occurred in 2018, rising by 146.0%.

Data from 2017 to 2020 show that pastry exports from ECOWAS in value terms were not concentrated on a few key destinations. Thailand accounted for 12.6% of exports, Chad for 9.2%, and France for 4.4%, together representing only 26.2% of total flows.

From 2017 to 2020, France stood out as the main market for pastry imports in value terms, accounting for 27.5%, followed by China at 15.6% and Turkey at 9.2%. Together, these three countries represented 52.2% of total flows.
