This peak was followed by a gradual three-year contraction, with the market falling to 1 451 thousand tons in 2023, marking a 21% drop from the high point.

In value terms, the market narrative diverged. Despite the falling volume after 2020, the total market value rose consistently, peaking at $475.9 million USD in 2022—more than double its 2018 level—indicating substantial price increases. This trend reversed sharply in 2023, when the market value dropped to $349.3 million USD, corresponding with the lower volume and suggesting a price correction.

The lowest export volume was 133.2 K t in 2018, which experienced the largest decline of 50.0%. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase of 15.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the partner structure for exports in kind was fragmented, with no single country holding a dominant share. Morocco accounted for 26.1% of exports, Portugal for 15.6%, and the United States for 4.4%, together making up only 46.1% of total flows.

Wheat bran, sharps, and residues exports from ECOWAS increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports amounted to 23 939 K $ US, marking an uptick of 24.8% compared to the previous year. Despite this, between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 33.5%, equating to an annualized decline of 12.7%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 17 282 K $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 52.0%.
