Earlier Report Observations

The European turkey meat market volume grew to 2 058 thousand tonnes in 2020, primarily due to increased consumer demand for frozen and chilled poultry during the COVID-19 pandemic, which led households to stock up on longer-lasting food items.

From 2021 onward, the market volume contracted, falling to 1 571 thousand tonnes by 2023. This sustained decline was largely caused by sharply rising feed costs for corn and soy, which increased production expenses and resulted in lower slaughter numbers and reduced turkey output across Europe.

During this period, the market structure evolved with the entry of new players such as Cargill, which launched an antibiotic-free turkey line in 2022, and Shady Brook Farm, which introduced protein-rich turkey snacks in 2023. Regulatory developments, including new EU labeling rules for poultry and the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation, also shaped the business environment, though the full enforcement of the deforestation rules was postponed to 2025.
