Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for pig offal in Europe expanded significantly from 107 thousand tons in 2018 to 298.5 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was primarily driven by a reduction in EU-wide pork exports, which fell by 16% in 2023, increasing domestic availability. Concurrently, African swine fever persistently affected pig herds and supply throughout the period, imposing constraints but not preventing overall expansion.

Consumer preferences shifted, with demand for organic pork growing early in the period, while general pork demand declined in 2021, briefly reducing market volume. In 2023, the exit of the Dutch player Vion from the German market reshaped the slaughter industry, strengthening the positions of major companies like Tönnies and Westfleisch.

By 2024, pig slaughter numbers rose by approximately 1.8%, and mixed feed production for pigs increased by 210 thousand tons to 8.2 million tons, indicating a recovery in pig production. Prices stabilized at economically viable levels, though lower than the previous year.
