Earlier Report Observations

The Turkish turkey meat and offal market volume stood at 59 841 metric tons in 2018, supported by state-backed investments and the opening of new production facilities in the poultry sector. However, in 2019, rising production costs, particularly for animal feed, put pressure on producers, leading to a contraction in output and a market volume drop to 46 374 metric tons. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused disruptions in global and regional supply chains, which reduced export activity and contributed to a slight market recovery to 49 400 metric tons.

Market volume fell to 43 566 metric tons in 2021 amid an economic crisis and following penalties from the Competition Authority for anti-competitive information exchange among broiler meat companies. In 2022, despite sharp increases in feed ingredient prices—corn rose by 115.4% and soy by 109.3%—which raised production costs, turkey meat production increased, and a decline in exports helped lift the market volume to 46 214 metric tons. The need to diversify export markets also emerged as a significant theme. The market then contracted to 42 195 metric tons in 2023, a year when turkey meat production specifically fell by 11.3%.

Throughout the period, high inflation, capital constraints, and elevated energy costs continued to challenge the sector's sustainable competitiveness, with feed-cost parity remaining a key focus into 2024 alongside ongoing efforts to broaden export destinations.
