Earlier Report Observations

Peru's treenuts market volume showed considerable movement from 2018 to 2023, beginning at 12.3 thousand tons before dipping to 11.1 thousand tons in 2019. This initial decline occurred alongside a sharp 67% contraction in South Korean demand for nuts, which severely reduced the value and volume of Peruvian exports. The market then rebounded to 16.2 thousand tons in 2020 despite logistical disruptions and increased transport costs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with exchange rate volatility that affected export price competitiveness.

A post-pandemic recovery in international demand, particularly from the U.S. and Asia, supported import growth and helped expand the market to 18.4 thousand tons in 2021. The following year, market volume surged to a peak of 24.1 thousand tons, driven largely by a rise in domestic production to 20.6 thousand tons. This increase was facilitated by the entry and expansion of new exporters, led by companies like White Lions Nuts SAC, which broadened the supply base. By 2023, falling international prices and a renewed decline in South Korean demand contributed to a drop in both production and imports, pulling the market volume down to 17.2 thousand tons. A concurrent shift in global consumer preference toward fresher, less processed nuts also reshaped export composition.

The operational environment for exporters was supported by long-term legal stability, including 40-year exploitation rights for concession holders, and trade agreements such as the FTA 2024 which maintained zero or reduced tariffs for nuts, reinforcing Peru's competitive position in international trade.
