From 2018 to 2022, the Peruvian lemons and limes market volume expanded steadily from 259.4 thousand tons to 337.4 thousand tons. This growth was driven by increased private investment and institutional support from SENASA for export certification, which boosted production capacity. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further supported global demand, while export opportunities surged in 2022 due to production issues in Mexico, leading to a sharp rise in export volumes and stimulating domestic market supply.

In 2023, the market volume dropped sharply to 264.9 thousand tons, a decline of over 20%. This contraction was primarily caused by social unrest and road blockades during nationwide protests, which disrupted distribution, combined with extensive crop damage from Cyclone Yaku in key growing regions like Piura and Lambayeque. Additionally, fertilizer shortages and adverse weather conditions further reduced harvests, leading to internal scarcity and supermarket purchase limits.

Peru's lemon and lime production volume increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 315.2 thousand tonnes of lemons and limes, marking a 4.4% gain compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 75.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 20.6%.

After rising for two years, Peru's lemon and lime production volume declined. In 2020, the output was valued at 260.0 million US dollars, reflecting a slight decrease of 2.3% year-over-year.
