Earlier Report Observations

The Peruvian fresh apple market volume expanded to 193.2 thousand tonnes in 2019, a 2.6% increase from the previous year. This growth was supported by state-led initiatives such as Sierra Exportadora, which promoted the cultivation of new apple varieties like Fuji, Gala, and Pink Lady, and provided training to small producers in Good Agricultural Practices to enhance quality and market access.

After stabilizing in 2020, the market volume entered a downward trend, declining to 168.1 thousand tonnes by 2023. This contraction coincided with a sharp drop in imports, which fell from 51.9 thousand tonnes in 2020 to 42.4 thousand tonnes in 2023, while domestic production also decreased. Shifting consumer preferences toward newer varieties and ongoing efforts to substitute imports with local production were insufficient to offset the overall market reduction.

The market dynamics were further influenced by global competition, particularly from Chilean and U.S. imports, and the persistent unmet domestic demand, which underscored the challenges in scaling up local apple cultivation despite favorable climatic conditions in Peru's inter-Andean valleys.
