Earlier Report Observations

Tomato juice production in India showed considerable movement from 2018 to 2020. Output was around 59.8 million liters in 2018, dipping to 57.5 million liters in 2019. This slight decline was influenced by climatic factors such as excessive monsoon rains and logistical hurdles like a lack of cold storage, which affected tomato supply. The government's launch of the 'Operation Greens' scheme aimed to manage price volatility for tomatoes and other vegetables. In 2020, production surged by 62% to 93.1 million liters. This sharp increase was primarily driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, which heightened consumer focus on healthy foods and boosted demand for vegetable juices like tomato juice.

Following the 2020 peak, production adjusted to 64.0 million liters in 2021, remaining above pre-pandemic levels. This period coincided with the entry of new players into the vegetable juice market, attracted by sustained health trends, while persistent logistical and transportation costs moderated output. Production then stabilized in 2022 and 2023 at approximately 62.6 and 61.7 million liters, respectively, with year-on-year declines of less than 2%. During these years, climatic factors and seasonal price volatility continued to affect tomato availability, while the Operation Greens policy framework provided underlying support for market stability.

By 2023, specific supply-side factors came to the fore. Adverse weather conditions and supply chain disruptions led to a significant increase in tomato prices, with retail prices reaching up to Rs 90 per kg in some regions. Concurrently, India's tomato exports grew substantially, reaching an approximate value of $6.96 billion in the 2023-2024 period, strengthening the broader tomato industry. Consumer preferences continued to shift towards convenient and healthy products, supporting ongoing innovation in the tomato juice segment.
