Taro production in South-eastern Asia fell from 360 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 281 thousand tonnes in 2023, a total contraction of 22%. The decline began with a sharp drop in 2019, was followed by a brief stabilization in 2020, and then continued steadily through the subsequent years.

The domestic market volume, reflecting available supply for consumption, shrank from 322 thousand tonnes in 2020 to 273 thousand tonnes in 2023. This reduction coincided with lower production and was accentuated by a significant rise in exports, which reached 13.1 thousand tonnes in 2023.

External trade exhibited considerable fluctuation, with imports jumping to 16 thousand tonnes in 2024 while exports receded from their high level the previous year. The full effect on the 2024 market size remains unclear in the absence of full-year production data.

In 2018, taro production in South-eastern Asia reached its peak at 360,000 tonnes. However, it declined by 12.1% in 2019 to 316,300 tonnes, the lowest level in the period. In 2020, production recovered slightly to 319,200 tonnes, marking a modest year-on-year increase of 0.9%. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 8%, with an average annual decline of 2.7%.

Exports taro from South-eastern Asia

Taro exports from South-eastern Asia showed significant volatility from 2017 to 2020. In 2018, exports hit their lowest point at 2,169 tonnes, a sharp 46.3% drop from the previous year. They rebounded strongly in 2019 with an 85.5% increase, but fell again in 2020 to 2,790 tonnes, down 30.7% year-on-year. The highest export volume was recorded in 2017, with levels 1.9 times higher than the 2018 low.

Taro export revenues from South-eastern Asia experienced notable fluctuations. In 2018, they declined by 35.4%, but rebounded with a 22.7% increase in 2019. In 2020, exports totaled $4.532 million, down 21.5% from the previous year. Over the entire 2017-2020 period, export value fell by 37.8%, with an average annual decrease of 14.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, the value of taro exports from South-eastern Asia was widely dispersed among many countries. Taro imports into South-eastern Asia grew steadily for three consecutive years. In 2020, they reached 5,207 tonnes, a substantial 63.7% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, import volumes surged by 361.2%, with an impressive average annual growth rate of 66.4%.
