Earlier Report Observations

Asian taro production showed modest fluctuations between 2018 and 2023, starting at 2 365 thousand tons in 2018 and edging down to 2 304 thousand tons by 2023. In 2018, the entry of new players and capacity expansion in India helped maintain output levels. The following year, production dipped slightly, but in 2020 it rebounded as policy measures across Asia offset supply-chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Market size, available from 2020 onward, declined gradually from 2 348 thousand tons in 2020 to 2 285 thousand tons in 2023. During this period, Chinese demand shifted toward convenience-oriented and deeply processed taro products, such as frozen ready meals, taro slices, and taro puree. This change in consumption patterns did not reverse the overall contraction in fresh taro volume.

In 2024, import volumes rose to 42 thousand tons while exports fell to 44 thousand tons. At the same time, export prices for taro jumped by 10% in Thailand and by 38% in Sri Lanka, reflecting stronger international demand, especially from the Middle East and Australia. In China, frozen taro cube products gained popularity, supported by advances in processing technology.
