The sweet potato market volume in South-eastern Asia showed significant volatility from 2018 to 2023. It began at 3.95 million tons, contracted by 8% to 3.64 million tons in 2019, then saw a modest 2.4% recovery in 2020 to 3.72 million tons. A further 3.4% decline followed in 2021, bringing the market to 3.60 million tons, before a notable 6.3% expansion in 2022 lifted it to 3.82 million tons. The period concluded with a sharp 15.2% drop in 2023, resulting in a market volume of 3.24 million tons.

Domestic production followed a similar pattern, falling from 3.98 million tons in 2018 to 3.26 million tons in 2023. Trade flows added to the market dynamics, with exports peaking at 144 thousand tons in 2019, reducing net domestic availability, while imports remained below 40 thousand tons for most of the period.

After a two-year decline, sweet potato production in South-eastern Asia increased. In 2020, the region produced 3 808 K t of sweet potatoes, which is 1.3% higher than in 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 6.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 3 759 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 5.7%.

After a two-year decline, exported sweet potato volumes from South-eastern Asia increased. In 2020, exports stood at 88.8 M $ US, representing a 20.0% gain compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 16.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 73.9 M $ US, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 22.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, China, Japan, and Hong Kong were the principal destinations for sweet potato exports in value terms, accounting for 38.0%, 17.5%, and 1.9% of exports, respectively. Together, they made up 57.5% of total export flows.
