Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for sunflower and safflower oil in Turkey expanded from 1.1 million tons to 1.3 million tons. This growth was supported by an increase in domestic oilseed production, driven by government agricultural support policies and the gradual adoption of more modern cultivation techniques. However, domestic output remained insufficient to meet demand, sustaining a reliance on imports.

A reduction in domestic production in 2021 was offset by rising imports, facilitated by the elimination of customs duties on crude sunflower oil and safflower seeds. From 2022 onward, geopolitical tensions from the Russia-Ukraine war created price volatility and global supply chain disruptions, prompting Turkey to boost imports sharply, which reached a record 1.5 million tons in 2023 to stabilize the domestic market.

Turkey's exports also grew, reaching 1.1 million tons in 2023, reinforcing its regional leader position. The market saw significant consolidation with Tiryaki Agro's acquisition of major brands like Yudum. Consumer preferences shifted towards healthier high-oleic variants, and in 2024, the zero-duty policy on crude oil imports was maintained to ensure supply amid high energy costs and currency fluctuations.
