The Turkish market for sunflower, safflower, and cottonseed oils expanded from 1.27 million tons in 2018 to 1.65 million tons in 2023. Growth was not steady, with a notable peak of 1.46 million tons in 2020 followed by a contraction to 1.38 million tons in 2021 before resuming its upward movement.

This period saw a shift in the market's supply structure. Domestic production declined from over 1.3 million tons in 2020 to around 1.1 million tons in the subsequent years. Simultaneously, imports surged, more than doubling from 525 thousand tons in 2018 to 1.65 million tons in 2023, indicating a growing reliance on foreign supply to meet domestic consumption.

Global supply chains were disrupted in 2024 following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which severely constrained worldwide sunflower oil availability. As a major importer, Turkey's trade flows were impacted, with imports decreasing to 1.41 million tons and exports adjusting to 1.09 million tons that year.

Turkey's exports of sunflower, safflower, or cottonseed oil and fractions in value terms rose for the second straight year. In 2020, exports amounted to 736.9 M $ US, a sharp 47.1% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 26.6%, with an average annual growth of 8.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 448.8 M $ US, which also experienced the largest decline of 22.9%.
