Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, Turkey's market for rapeseed, colza, or mustard oil more than doubled in volume from 35 793 t to 78 754 t. The initial surge to 60 445 t in 2019 was driven by state subsidies and agricultural policies focused on the Thrace region, coupled with improved seed quality and farming practices that boosted yields. Investments in domestic processing capacity and the development of private-label products further supported this expansion.

Supply-chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with increased export volumes, contributed to a temporary decline to 46 391 t by 2021. However, the government's oilseeds sector policy for 2020‑2024, which aimed to expand cultivation areas, and steady demand from the growing food-service industry laid the foundation for recovery. Modernization and capacity increases at production facilities, notably the active crude oil plant in Gelibolu, then helped push market volume to 69 159 t in 2022.

Consumer preference for healthier oils rich in omega‑3 and omega‑6 fatty acids sustained demand, while state incentives for farmer inputs and elevated global prices stimulated local production, leading to a further rise to 78 754 t in 2023. In 2024, regulatory changes under Law No. 7501 promoted the use of renewable energy sources, and updated oilseed support policies were implemented, with the Gelibolu plant and packaging facilities in İzmir Kemalpaşa remaining key production centers.
