The Swiss market for sucrose in solid form reached a peak of 310.9 thousand tons in 2019, after which it entered a sustained contraction, falling to 228.6 thousand tons by 2023.

This decline was primarily driven by a sharp drop in domestic production, which decreased from 240 thousand tons in 2019 to 161.2 thousand tons in 2023. Import volumes fluctuated during the period, rising to a high of 84.5 thousand tons in 2022, but were insufficient to compensate for the loss in local output.

The market contraction was most pronounced in 2022 and 2023, with annual decreases of approximately 10%, following a more moderate reduction after the 2019 peak.
