The market volume for chemically pure sucrose in solid form in Western Europe fluctuated between 7.2 million tons and 9.2 million tons from 2018 to 2023. After reaching 7.3 million tons in 2018, it grew to 8.2 million tons in 2019, then dipped to 7.8 million tons in 2020 before surging to a peak of 9.2 million tons in 2021. A sharp contraction followed in 2022 to 7.4 million tons, with a recovery to 8.4 million tons in 2023.

From 2020, global sugar production stabilized at approximately 180 million tons annually, influencing production capacity and the availability of sucrose in Western Europe. This coincided with a period of market adjustment where domestic production volumes varied.

By 2024, underlying trends included a sevenfold increase in E85 superethanol consumption since 2018, which raised demand for sucrose in biofuel production. Concurrently, regulatory measures and sugar taxes in several European countries drove product reformulation to reduce sugar content, while consumer preferences shifted toward cleaner labels and alternative sweeteners.

Western Europe's production of sucrose in solid form has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 10 174 thousand tons, marking a modest 7.6% decrease from 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 22.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 8.2%.

After two years of decline, Western Europe's production of sucrose in solid form saw an increase in value. In 2020, output was valued at 6 115 million US dollars, up 7.0% from the previous year. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, production value decreased by 24.1%, averaging an 8.8% annual drop. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 5 717 million US dollars, while the sharpest decline occurred in 2018 with a 27.9% fall.

Exports of sucrose in solid form from Western Europe fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region exported 3 719 thousand tons, a slight decrease of 4.6% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports dropped by 16.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of -6.0%. The peak was in 2018 at 5 898 thousand tons, followed by the largest decline in 2019 of 33.9%, while 2018 also saw the biggest increase of 31.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom were key buyers of sucrose in solid form from Western Europe, accounting for 20.5%, 10.9%, and 8.1% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, they made up 39.5% of total exports, with the remaining 60.5% distributed among numerous other trading partners.

In 2020, Western Europe's exports of sucrose in solid form in value terms reached 2 235 million US dollars, a 10.4% increase from the previous year. However, over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 18.5%, averaging a 6.6% annual decline. The lowest value was in 2019 at 2 025 million US dollars, while the highest was in 2018 at 2 910 million US dollars. The most significant drop occurred in 2019 with a 30.4% decrease.

After two years of decline, imports of sucrose in solid form into Western Europe rebounded. In 2020, the region imported about 1 317 thousand tons, a strong 20.1% increase from 2019. Despite this, over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 39.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -15.4%. The lowest volume was in 2019 at 1 096 thousand tons, and the largest decline happened in 2018 with a 35.9% drop.

Over the 2017-2020 period, however, imports fell by 12.6%, averaging a 4.4% annual decline. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 826 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decrease of 20.1%.

Poland, Czechia, and the United Kingdom accounted for 6.5%, 5.6%, and 4.2% of imports, respectively, totaling just 16.3% of overall value.
