The market volume for soybean oilcake in Africa declined from 8.5 million tonnes in 2018 to 7.6 million tonnes in 2023. This overall reduction occurred despite a steady increase in domestic production, which rose from 4.7 million tonnes to 5.0 million tonnes over the period. The contraction was primarily driven by a sharp drop in imports, which fell from 3.9 million tonnes to 3.1 million tonnes, coupled with a growing export stream.

Domestic production expanded consistently from 2018 onward, supported by the commissioning of new soybean crushing facilities and increased planting areas. For instance, additional crushing capacity came online in 2020, and continued area expansion in 2019 and 2021 boosted soybean availability for processing. This production growth enabled import substitution, a policy priority noted in reports from 2018 and 2022, leading to a structural shift away from imported oilcake.

Exports of soybean oilcake gained momentum, particularly after 2020, driven by new market opportunities. The Chinese export protocol initiated in 2019 opened access to Asian markets, while exploration of export destinations in Southern Africa, the Middle East, and the EU in 2022 further stimulated overseas sales. Although animal feed demand remained strong, the combined effect of falling imports and rising exports reduced the total volume available on the domestic market.

Soybean oilcake production in Africa has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Africa produced 5 923 K t of soybean oilcake, representing a 15.6% increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 76.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 20.7%.

The data shows irregular changes, indicating a volatile market environment. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 73 K t, while the maximum was reached in 2020 at 325 K t, representing a 4.4-fold variation between these years. In 2020, soybean oilcake exports from Africa amounted to 170 M $ US, up by 59.8% year-over-year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 58.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 16.6%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 106 M $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 23.6%.

France accounted for 4.6% of exports in value terms, Syria for 2.8%, and Lebanon for 1.9%, with these three countries jointly representing only 9.3% of total flows.
