Earlier Report Observations

The market for maize bran, sharps and residues in Africa expanded from 3 392 thousand tons in 2018 to 4 645 thousand tons in 2023, with a notable surge of 24% in 2020. This jump coincided with global supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, which altered trade flows and boosted domestic milling activity. Later, in 2022, demand was reinforced by the growing use of bran and germ as ingredients in animal feed, adding a new outlet for mill by-products. The upward trend continued in 2023, supported by a 5.8% increase in maize planted area in key producing regions, which raised raw material availability for mills.

Underlying the volume growth, the maize milling sector maintained a stable capacity of around 3.7 million tons per year, with ongoing process improvements such as degermination and controlled conditioning that enhanced extraction rates and product quality. The market remained concentrated among a few large players, though the entry of smaller, cost-effective community millers added to overall industry activity without fundamentally changing the supply structure.

After the peak in 2020, market volume dipped slightly in 2021 to 4 057 thousand tons, reflecting normal fluctuations in production and trade. The overall trajectory, however, stayed positive, culminating in a record volume of 4 645 thousand tons by 2023, as the factors driving demand for milling residues remained favorable.
