Earlier Report Observations

Government initiatives, such as Nigeria's presidential focus on oil seed crops, aimed at self-sufficiency and set high production targets, creating a favorable environment for the groundnut oil-cake sector. This policy backdrop, combined with the entry of new small and medium-scale oil mills using improved mechanical pressing technology, supported a rise in production to 2 053 thousand tons in 2019. Although production dipped to 1 946 thousand tons in 2020, the ongoing regulatory restrictions on edible oil imports and advancements in solvent extraction methods continued to shape the market's fundamentals.

The market rebounded in 2021 with production reaching 2 012 thousand tons, driven by investments in new processing facilities and expansion of existing mills to meet robust domestic demand fueled by consumer preference for local, natural oils. This growth was sharply reversed in 2022 when production plummeted to 1 434 thousand tons and market volume fell to 1 293 thousand tons, primarily due to global supply chain disruptions and fluctuating commodity prices that impacted raw material availability and costs across Africa.

A partial recovery occurred in 2023, with production edging up to 1 468 thousand tons and market volume increasing to 1 382 thousand tons, indicating a stabilization after the previous year's significant contraction.
