The sheep and goat meat market in Uzbekistan contracted to 427 thousand tonnes in 2019 from 458.6 thousand tonnes the previous year. This decline was primarily driven by an 8.8-fold drop in imports of live sheep and goats, which reduced the number of animals available for slaughter. From 2020, the market rebounded, reaching 442.5 thousand tonnes, as state policies aimed at developing domestic production and reducing import dependency began to take effect.

Growth continued steadily through 2023, with the market volume expanding to 494.1 thousand tonnes. This was supported by ongoing government efforts to curb live animal imports and stimulate local meat processing, which encouraged increased domestic output. In parallel, Uzbekistan actively pursued the development of its poultry sector, including the establishment of large-scale meat production facilities under presidential decrees. By 2024, measures such as the removal of poultry meat export restrictions and customs duty benefits for poultry imports were introduced, while rising exports of lamb from Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan indicated shifting trade flows in the region.

Following two years of decline, Uzbekistan's sheep and goat meat production rebounded in 2020. The country produced 442.2 thousand tons that year, marking a modest 3.5% increase from 2019. However, over the entire 2017-2020 period, production fell by 8.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.9%. The lowest output was recorded in 2019 at 427.4 thousand tons, which also saw the steepest annual decline of 6.8%.
