In 2018, Ukraine's coniferous roundwood market stood at 12 762 thousand m³, with softwood species historically accounting for about 65% of industrial fuelwood harvests. Over the next three years, market volume gradually contracted, reaching 10 223 thousand m³ by 2021. This period saw legislative moves to formalize the timber sector, including a draft wood-market law designed to boost transparency through a forest portal and the approval of a national forest inventory procedure.

The full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 abruptly deepened the downturn, cutting production to 8 685 thousand m³. War-related disruptions, reduced flows of Russian sawnwood that altered regional supply balances, and a surge in firewood demand reshaped the market. By 2023, volume slipped further to 8 471 thousand m³, pressured by the ongoing conflict as well as declining global pulp prices and curtailed cellulose output in Europe and North America, which weakened demand for softwood fiber.

Ukraine ranked 21st globally in roundwood coniferous production between 2017 and 2020.

Ukraine's roundwood coniferous production fell for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 10 892 K m³, marking a 3.3% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production dropped by 7.8%, with an average annual decline of 2.7%. The highest output was in 2018 at 12 762 K m³. The sharpest drop occurred in 2019, down 11.7%, while the biggest gain was in 2018, up 8.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium and China were the dominant destinations for Ukraine's roundwood coniferous exports in volume, together making up 81.0% of the total. Other countries had significantly smaller shares.
