Earlier Report Observations
The market volume for fuel wood chips and particles in Ukraine grew from 360 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 433 thousand tonnes in 2019. This expansion was driven by state forestry enterprises increasing timber harvesting and processing, as well as the emergence of a new product segment—using wood chips as biofuel for energy generation, supported by a shift in consumer preferences toward renewable energy sources.
From 2020 to 2022, the market contracted significantly, falling to 323 thousand tonnes by 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and reduced demand for industrial use in 2020, while subsequent years saw continued decline due to economic and logistical challenges, stricter forestry legislation, and finally the impact of war and sanctions in 2022, which caused supply interruptions and altered trade routes.
In 2023, production stabilized at around 406 thousand tonnes, but market volume dropped further to 276 thousand tonnes as exports partially recovered. By 2024, export volumes remained subdued at 72 thousand tonnes.
