Earlier Report Observations

Coniferous roundwood production in Europe followed a declining trend from 2018 to 2023. After starting at 587 million cubic meters in 2018, output dipped to 567 million cubic meters by 2020, saw a temporary recovery to 587 million cubic meters in 2021, and then fell sharply to 522 million cubic meters in 2023, marking an overall contraction of more than 11%.

The domestic market size, reflecting available roundwood for consumption, decreased from 557 million cubic meters in 2020 to 518 million cubic meters in 2023. This reduction occurred alongside falling import volumes, which dropped from 31 million cubic meters to 24 million cubic meters over the same period, and a notable decline in exports after they peaked at 45 million cubic meters in 2021. By 2024, imports had further decreased to 21 million cubic meters while exports settled at 29 million cubic meters.
