Coniferous roundwood production in the CIS began the period at a high level of 211.7 million m³ in 2018, driven by record timber harvesting volumes in Russia. A combination of a raw material surplus and operational difficulties in winter logging led to a decrease in output to 196.0 million m³ the following year. The market then entered a phase of stabilization in 2020, with production edging down slightly to 195.1 million m³.

Output saw a modest recovery to 199.5 million m³ in 2021 as the Russian timber industry initiated a strategic shift toward manufacturing higher value-added products. A pivotal change occurred with the introduction of Russia's ban on exports of unprocessed coniferous and valuable hardwood timber from January 2022, a policy designed to promote domestic deep processing, which contributed to a production decline to 184.7 million m³ that year. The downward trend continued into 2023, with output falling to 172.2 million m³ against the backdrop of an ongoing industry crisis and reduced sawmill capacity utilization.

Coniferous roundwood production in the CIS has declined for the second year in a row. In 2019, output remained relatively stable, but by 2020 it had dropped to 195.1 million cubic meters. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 3.2%, which translates to an average annual increase of 1.1%. The peak was reached in 2018, with 211.7 million cubic meters produced. That year also saw the largest annual increase, at 12.0%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the steepest decline, with production falling by 7.4%.
