Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market for roasted, not decaffeinated coffee in Greece showed initial stability followed by a contraction. Market volume in physical terms remained around 26 500 t in 2018 and 2019 before declining to 23 894 t in 2020, while market value stayed near $260-262 million. The market's resilience in the earlier years was underpinned by coffee's entrenched role as an affordable luxury and daily staple in Greek culture, sustaining consumption even during economic uncertainty.

The market recovered and expanded significantly from 2022 onward. Volume rebounded to 26 333 t in 2022 and peaked at 28 129 t in 2023, while market value grew steadily from $260.5 million in 2020 to $358.6 million in 2024. This value increase was influenced by regulatory changes: an environmental levy on single-use plastic packaging introduced in January 2022 raised packaging costs, and new EU labeling guidelines for beverages affected compliance expenses. Furthermore, from July 2024, the application of the standard 24% VAT rate to on-site coffee consumption altered pricing strategies and consumer behavior.
