Roasted, not decaffeinated coffee market in Spain

After reaching 125.2 thousand tons in 2018, the market volume for roasted, not decaffeinated coffee in Spain grew to 131.9 thousand tons in 2019. A sharp contraction followed in 2020, with volume falling to 114.8 thousand tons, coinciding with a steep rise in green coffee, packaging, and energy costs that forced operators to raise retail prices and dampened overall physical demand. Recovery was swift in 2021, as the market rebounded to 134.6 thousand tons, fueled by the expansion of roasting capacity at major processors and growing consumer interest in premium decaffeinated products.

By 2024, the market volume had risen to 157.5 thousand tons, reflecting continued investment in domestic roasting facilities and Spain's consolidation as a leading European producer of decaffeinated coffee. Throughout the period, regulatory developments such as mandatory decaffeination labeling and the impending EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) introduced new traceability requirements and influenced product differentiation in the supply chain.

Spain's production of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 980 million US dollars, marking a significant decrease of 10.4% compared to 2019. The highest production value was recorded in 2018 at 1,101 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 11.4%.

Following two years of growth, Spain's production of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee declined. In 2020, production reached 110.4 thousand tonnes, showing a substantial drop of 11.2% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 2.3%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 0.8%. The peak was in 2019 at 124.4 thousand tonnes, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 5.9%.

In 2020, Spain's export volume of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee stood at 18,584 tonnes, reflecting a strong increase of 23.9% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 10%, with an annualized rate of 3.2%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 15,002 tonnes, which also experienced the largest annual decline of 18.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Portugal, France, and Italy remained the primary buyers of Spain's roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee by volume. Portugal accounted for 29.9% of exports, France for 20.9%, and Italy for 9.1%, together representing 59.9% of total export volume.

Spain exported 160.7 million US dollars worth of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee in 2020, indicating a modest gain of 7.8% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 2.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.8%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 149.1 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual decline of 6.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Portugal, France, and Italy continued to be the key destinations for Spain's roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee exports by value. Portugal represented 27.6% of export value, France 23.1%, and Italy 9.1%, collectively accounting for 59.9% of total export flows.

Spain imported 22,968 tonnes of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee in 2020, up by 2.0% year-on-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 3.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of -1.2%. The lowest import volume was in 2019 at 22,515 tonnes, while the highest was in 2018 at 23,843 tonnes. The largest annual decline occurred in 2019 at 5.6%.

Throughout 2017-2020, France, Germany, and Portugal were the main sources of roasted, non-decaffeinated coffee imports to Spain by volume. France accounted for 28.7% of imports, Germany for 22.0%, and Portugal for 15.6%, together making up 66.4% of total import volume.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 9.6%, with an annualized rate of 3.1%. The lowest import value was recorded in 2019 at 280.8 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest annual decline of 6.2%.
