Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the market for roasted coffee in Germany saw initial growth, with volume rising to 412 thousand tonnes in 2019. This was supported by shifting consumer preferences towards premium blends and whole beans, as well as the market entry of Nestlé as the retail distributor for Starbucks brands starting in 2018. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 boosted retail sales for home consumption, helping to maintain market volume at a stable level of 412 thousand tonnes.

From 2021 onwards, the market entered a phase of consistent contraction, with volume declining to 388 thousand tonnes in 2021 and 366 thousand tonnes in 2022. This downward adjustment reflected a shift in market dynamics after the earlier period of expansion.

The decline accelerated in 2023 and 2024, with volume dropping to 353 thousand tonnes and then to 335 thousand tonnes. This was largely driven by sharp increases in green coffee prices due to crop failures from extreme weather and climate change, which raised retail prices and reduced overall consumption volume. Despite ongoing trends like demand for sustainable and instant coffee, the cost pressure outweighed these structural shifts.
