The volume of Greece's roasted coffee market declined from 27 043 t in 2018 to 24 462 t in 2020, with the sharp drop in 2020 largely attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic reducing out-of-home consumption.

Market volume recovered to 27 239 t in 2022, driven by a sustained shift to home consumption. Simultaneously, global coffee prices rose sharply due to climate-induced supply shortages in Brazil and Vietnam, increasing the market value to 312.3 million USD in 2022.

By 2023, market volume reached 28 844 t, and value continued climbing to 372.1 million USD in 2024. The persistent Special Consumption Tax on coffee and ongoing global supply-demand imbalances kept prices elevated, while investments like the new ultra-modern production line in Koropi expanded domestic capacity.

Roasted coffee production in Greece experienced a decline after two years of growth. In 2019, output reached its peak at 161.2 million US dollars, but by 2020, it had decreased moderately to 155.7 million US dollars, representing a 3.4% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 13.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.4%. The most significant increase occurred in 2018, when production rose by 9.2%.

After two years of growth, Greece's roasted coffee production volume declined. In 2019, production peaked at 15 296 tonnes, but in 2020, it fell to 14 348 tonnes, a year-on-year decrease of 6.2%. From 2017 to 2020, production increased by 6.3%, translating to an average annual rate of 2.1%. The largest increase was recorded in 2019, with a 10.6% rise.

Following two years of growth, roasted coffee exports from Greece declined. In 2019, exports reached their highest point at 2 142 tonnes, but in 2020, they dropped slightly to 2 102 tonnes, a 1.8% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 52.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 15.0%. The most substantial increase occurred in 2019, when exports surged by 32.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Cyprus, Switzerland, and the United States were the primary destinations for Greece's roasted coffee exports by volume. Cyprus accounted for 31.6% of exports, Switzerland for 10.8%, and the United States for 8.9%. Together, these three countries absorbed 51.4% of Greece's total roasted coffee exports in kind.

Roasted coffee exports from Greece increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 18.6 million US dollars, marking a 7.0% rise compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 57.5%, equating to an average annual rate of 16.3%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Cyprus, the United States, and Germany were the key partners for Greece's roasted coffee exports by value. Cyprus accounted for 44.5% of exports, the United States for 7.6%, and Germany for 7.2%. Collectively, these three countries represented 59.3% of total export flows in value terms.

Imports roasted coffee to Greece

Imports in kind, t

Foreign roasted coffee supplies to Greece declined for the second consecutive year. In 2018, imports peaked at 14 823 tonnes, but by 2020, they had decreased to 12 216 tonnes, an 11.1% drop from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 2.9%, with an average annual decline of 1.0%. The largest increase was recorded in 2018, when imports rose by 17.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, Germany, and Bulgaria were the main contributors to Greece's roasted coffee imports by volume. Italy accounted for 57.4% of imports, Germany for 11.1%, and Bulgaria for 9.2%. Together, these three countries made up 77.8% of total import flows in kind.

In 2020, the value of roasted coffee imports into Greece totaled 130.8 million US dollars, a 4.6% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 13.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.4%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 134.1 million US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a 6.8% drop, while the most significant increase was in 2018, with a 16.6% rise.
