The subsequent drop to 172 metric tons in 2023 was influenced by global factors, including volatility in raw material prices and demand on international markets, which affected production levels and market activity.

Throughout the period, the quality of raw silk remained a key factor for the competitiveness of Tajik enterprises, with improvements seen as essential for enhancing revenues and export market access. However, the persistent lack of investment in modernization and advanced processing technology continued to limit the market's expansion potential.

Tajikistan's raw silk production grew for the third year in a row in 2020, reaching 195.6 tonnes. This marked a modest increase of 6.7% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 13.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.2%.

Exports raw silk from Tajikistan

Export volumes showed significant fluctuations during this period. In 2019, volumes hit their lowest point at 4 632 kg, which was 65.7% lower than the previous peak. By 2020, exports rebounded sharply to 8 771 kg, an 89.4% increase from 2019. The highest volume was recorded in 2017, with a 5.5-fold difference between the peak in 2017 and the low in 2019.

Between 2017 and 2020, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan were the primary markets for Tajikistan's raw silk exports, together accounting for 80.5% of total shipments. Other destinations played a smaller role in the export structure.

Export values exhibited irregular patterns, pointing to a volatile market. In 2019, values dropped to their lowest point at 156.1 thousand US dollars, a decline of 47.9%. In 2020, exports surged to 336.7 thousand US dollars, a dramatic increase of 115.7% compared to the previous year. The peak was in 2017, with a 2.6-fold gap between the high in 2017 and the low in 2019.
