The silkworm cocoon market in Tajikistan has been shaped by long-term challenges, including a shrinking feed base due to reduced mulberry plantation areas. In 2018, the privatization of the main cocoon enterprise 'Pillai Tojik' transferred control to the private company 'Production Association Ganj', altering the market structure. State programs from 2020 onward aimed to reverse the decline by rehabilitating existing plantations and introducing high-yield mulberry varieties.

Market volume fluctuated between 1 284 t in 2018 and 1 226 t in 2023, with a peak of 1 397 t in 2020. The import of cold-resistant mulberry seedlings in 2020 helped expand the feed base, supporting production. Amendments to environmental laws in 2022 introduced new requirements for cocoon production, while continued expansion of mulberry areas in 2023 sought to address feed shortages.

By 2023, the market volume stood at 1 226 t, below the 2018 level. The industry continued to face feed base shortages and low producer motivation. In 2024, further state support measures included customs duty exemptions for imported cocoon seeds and new export duty rates, alongside plans to plant millions of mulberry seedlings to bolster the feed base.
