Earlier Report Observations

The ASEAN raw silk market contracted sharply from 1 448 t in 2018 to 726 t in 2020. This decline coincided with rapidly rising global import prices and a reduction in the worldwide harvested area, which constrained supply and made imports more expensive. At the same time, these conditions encouraged ASEAN producers to increase exports, which nearly doubled from 584 t to 1 030 t over the period while imports fell by almost two-thirds.

After 2020, the market stabilized at around 676 t in 2021 and 2022 before recovering to 769 t in 2023. Domestic production grew steadily throughout, reaching 1 768 t by 2023, which helped supply both local and export markets. The later period saw strong global export demand, including a significant surge in worldwide raw silk exports in 2022 and growing consumption in the United States in 2023, supporting ASEAN's export-oriented production growth.
