This surge was primarily fueled by the EU's renewable energy directives, which incentivized biodiesel blending and raised demand for rapeseed oil, subsequently increasing oilcake production as a by-product. Concurrently, import flows strengthened, notably in Denmark, reflecting heightened regional trade activity.

In 2024, the market environment was characterized by tightening EU rapeseed supplies due to record crushings and reduced imports, alongside rallies in vegetable oil prices. These conditions, coupled with ongoing policy support for biodiesel, continued to influence market dynamics.

Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 3.6%, averaging a 1.2% annual increase. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 540.9 M $ US, which also experienced the largest annual rise of 18.4%. In contrast, 2019 saw the most significant decline of 11.7%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 17.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.4%. The peak was in 2018 at 710 K t, which also recorded the largest annual increase of 62.1%. The most substantial decline occurred in 2019, falling by 27.4%.
