The market volume for wheat bran, sharps and residues in Northern Europe experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After peaking at 1 902 thousand tons in 2018, consumption fell sharply to 1 654 thousand tons in 2019, a drop of over 13%. The market then gradually recovered, reaching 1 830 thousand tons by 2022, before stabilizing at 1 814 thousand tons in 2023.

This trajectory was shaped by changes in domestic production and net trade. Production declined from 1 429 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 268 thousand tons in 2021, before partially rebounding to 1 324 thousand tons in 2023. Imports, after a notable decrease to 447 thousand tons in 2019, rose steadily and reached 630 thousand tons in 2023, which helped support overall market volume despite lower domestic output.

Production of wheat bran, sharps and residues in Northern Europe has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, output reached 1 338 K t, marking a 2.0% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 5.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 429 K t, which also saw the largest increase of 12.8%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the most significant decline of 4.4%.

The value of wheat bran, sharps and residues production in Northern Europe has fallen for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 253.6 M $ US, down 1.6% from the year before. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value decreased by 5.8%, with an average annual decline of 2.0%. The peak value occurred in 2018 at 288.1 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 7.0%. Meanwhile, 2019 recorded the steepest drop of 10.6%.

Northern Europe's exports of wheat bran, sharps and residues have increased for the third year running. In 2020, export volume rose to 181.0 K t, up 14.8% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 39.7%, translating to an average annual growth rate of 11.8%.

The export structure in kind from 2017 to 2020 was diversified, with no single country holding a clearly dominant position. Poland accounted for 10.5% of exports in kind, the Netherlands for 3.6%, and Morocco for 2.5%. Together, these three countries made up just 16.6% of total flows, indicating a broad distribution across many markets.

In 2020, cross-border shipments of wheat bran, sharps and residues from Northern Europe were valued at 34.3 M $ US, a 15.2% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value rose by 24.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.6%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 1.3%.
