Earlier Report Observations

The starch-manufacture residues market in Northern Europe began the period at a high volume of 612 thousand tons in 2018, supported by peak consumption levels across Europe and strong demand from the food, beverage, and paper manufacturing industries. Strategic moves by major players, such as Archer Daniels Midland Company acquiring a stake in a food ingredients business and Tate & Lyle PLC expanding its R&D capabilities, reflected the market's vitality. However, by 2019, the market receded to 574 thousand tons amid a phase of stabilization and a lack of new growth drivers or facility expansions.

Market volume rebounded sharply to 625 thousand tons in 2020 and surged to a peak of 744 thousand tons in 2021. This growth was primarily fueled by accelerated consumer demand for clean-label and natural ingredients, a trend that intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, a sustained shift in consumer preferences towards sustainable and plant-based products continued to stimulate consumption throughout 2021.

From 2022, the market contracted significantly, falling to 577 thousand tons and then to 509 thousand tons in 2023. During these years, the industry saw continued strategic activity, including the formation of a joint venture between AGRANA and Ingredion to expand production capacity in Romania and Tate & Lyle's acquisition of CP Kelco. Despite these investments aimed at strengthening supply capabilities, the overall market volume declined, indicating a reduction in demand or broader market adjustments.
