Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2020, Brazilian rapeseed oilcake production remained relatively stable, fluctuating around 27 000 t with a slight decline to 26 000 t by 2020. This period was influenced by global trade tensions, particularly the U.S.-China trade war, which created uncertainty in oilseed markets. Additionally, rising production costs due to higher prices for imported fertilizers pressured profitability.
A sharp turnaround began in 2021, with production jumping to 42 400 t and then soaring to 86 600 t by 2023. The surge was primarily driven by robust international demand for protein meals, including oilcake, as well as the expansion of oilseed processing capacity in Brazil. Adverse weather in the United States reduced global soybean supply, increasing the attractiveness of rapeseed products. Furthermore, the war in Ukraine disrupted rapeseed exports from the Black Sea region, opening opportunities for Brazilian output to fill the gap.
