From 2018 to 2023, the rapeseed oilcake market in Portugal showed notable volatility. The market volume started at 144 thousand tonnes in 2018, then dipped to 124.1 thousand tonnes in 2019 before recovering to around 130-131 thousand tonnes in 2020-2021. A sharp contraction to 98.9 thousand tonnes occurred in 2022, followed by a strong rebound to 135.9 thousand tonnes in 2023. The launch of a new 1,000-tonnes-per-day rapeseed crushing plant in July 2021 directly boosted domestic production, which jumped from 59 thousand tonnes in 2020 to 85 thousand tonnes in 2021, supporting market volume stability that year.

Domestic production capacity for rapeseed oilcake expanded with significant investments in processing infrastructure. Renewed interest in rapeseed cultivation, supported by new high-yield seed varieties and industry backing from companies like Sovena, laid the groundwork. The commissioning of advanced oil extraction equipment and the 2021 plant startup enhanced the ability to adjust protein content in meal, aligning output with market demands for quality.

Trade flows also shifted over the period. Imports fluctuated widely, peaking at 100.9 thousand tonnes in 2020 but falling to 44.8 thousand tonnes in 2022, which contributed to that year's market contraction. Exports declined steadily from 38.6 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 9.8 thousand tonnes in 2023, freeing more supply for the domestic market. These movements, alongside changes in domestic production, drove the overall market volume changes.
