Earlier Report Observations

The rapeseed market volume in Sub-Saharan Africa showed considerable movement from 2018 to 2023, beginning at 147 thousand tonnes. It declined to 137 thousand tonnes in 2019 before a sharp increase of over 60% lifted the market to 221 thousand tonnes in 2020. After easing to 202 thousand tonnes in 2021, growth resumed, reaching 211 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 246 thousand tonnes in 2023.

The market's rise in 2023 coincided with stronger export flows from Europe to West Africa and the Maghreb, which stimulated port activity and trade. Global influences, including higher Canadian canola prices and a weaker euro, enhanced the international competitiveness of European rapeseed. For 2024, trade data reveals a significant shift as imports jumped to 25 thousand tonnes while exports fell to 24 thousand tonnes, a move toward net imports that aligns with the region's projected economic recovery of 3.8% growth in that year.
