From 2018 to 2020, Bangladesh's rapeseed market volume expanded from 462 thousand tonnes to 858 thousand tonnes, largely due to a surge in imports. Government policies aiming to increase oilseed production and the release of over 20 improved rapeseed and mustard varieties by state research institutes supported domestic output growth.

After peaking in 2020, the market volume declined to 715 thousand tonnes by 2022 as imports dropped from 500 thousand tonnes to 305 thousand tonnes. Although record mustard production was anticipated in 2022 following continued policy support, the overall market shrank due to reduced import volumes.

In 2023, the market recovered to 886 thousand tonnes as domestic production jumped 34% to 547 thousand tonnes. Some farmers shifted acreage to potato cultivation, but higher productivity and the emergence of blending rapeseed with mustard seeds during crushing supported production growth and created a new product segment for domestic mustard oil.

After a two-year decline, rapeseed production in Bangladesh rebounded. In 2020, the country produced 358.2 thousand tonnes of rapeseed, marking a 14.9% year-on-year increase. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 311.7 thousand tonnes, which represented the largest decline of 11.3% during this period.
