Castor seed production in Sub-Saharan Africa began at 108 thousand tons in 2018, with Mozambique contributing stable small-scale output. Output dipped slightly to 106.1 thousand tons in 2019 before recovering to 110.8 thousand tons in 2020, a period marked by global supply chain and weather challenges.

Production growth continued, reaching 112.3 thousand tons in 2021 as rising global demand for bio-based products spurred cultivation interest. A significant jump to 117.8 thousand tons occurred in 2022 following agreements by Casterra Ag Ltd. with local producers to expand high-yield castor seed farming. Output then stabilized at 117 thousand tons in 2023 as Casterra continued to scale its operations across the region.

In 2024, Casterra Ag Ltd. commenced its harvesting season, supporting long-term production infrastructure. The region exported 14 thousand tons of castor seeds while importing 3.4 thousand tons, indicating sustained market activity driven by the global shift toward sustainable and bio-based products.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, castor seed production reached 110.8 thousand tonnes in 2020, marking a 4.4% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 8.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.8%. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when production fell by 1.7%. In contrast, the largest increase was recorded in 2018, with a 5.8% rise.
